'New Moon' villain Dakota Fanning talks about joining the 'Twilight' family

Compared to most of her Twilight: New Moon co-stars, 15-year-old Dakota Fanning — who plays the powerful Volturi Jane — is already an old hand at movie-making. But behind the star of hits like War of the Worlds (2005) and I Am Sam (2001) is a surprisingly normal student at an L.A. high school. On the Monday after New Moon’s record-breaking bow, Fanning made time for a quick pre-class chat with EW about the Twilight phenomenon and the joys of playing a villain.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where are you right now?
DAKOTA FANNING: I’m at school. I’m hiding from any teacher that would see me on my phone right now. But technically it’s allowed because it’s before school has started.

What’s it like to come back to high school now that the move is out?
That’s my life. That’s what’s normal to me. I don’t really know anything different. I’m really lucky that I get to go to school and have that normal life, whatever that is, and then also get to do what I love to do and be a part of really great projects.

How do you think your classmates will react to the movie?
Most of them have already seen the movie, so they’re very excited about it. I’ll definitely be talking to some people about it today, I’m sure.

What was your reaction when you started hearing the box-office numbers?
I mean, I think that there are so many fans of the book and the movie, and it’s just sort of exciting that so many people went to see it on the first weekend. I know so many people were camping out for days to wait for it. And I think that it’s great that everyone got to see it right when it came out.

You knew that it was going to be big. But the biggest opening day ever?
I don’t know if I realized it would be the biggest, but I certainly knew it would be big because of all the fans you encounter at the premiere. Everyone is a Twilight fan in some way, I think.

Did you do anything special to celebrate how well the movie did?
I’m such a little part of the film. It’s really Kristen, Rob, and Taylor and everyone who should be doing the celebrating. It’s all of their hard work. For me, I was just there for a week and a half and got to have so much fun. I was really excited to be a part of it.

Were you a fan of the series before you were cast?
Of course I was a fan. I had read the books and everything.

Your character, the Volturi member Jane, is terrifying. Was it fun to play evil?
Yeah. It’s one of the first times that I’ve done that. And this is a character that really takes pleasure in causing people pain. And that’s kind of a fascinating character to get to play. So that was definitely one of the reasons that I wanted to do it.

Are people reacting to you differently now that they’ve seen you play a villain?
I guess people and fans of the series that have seen me in the movie will see me in a different way, but I think that’s what being an actor is. It’s getting to manipulate yourself to fit characters. I think your job is to be a blank canvas and take on your characters, so that’s what I love doing. And I love getting to play all different kinds of people. And, yeah, surprise people with my red eyes, I guess.

Those were creepy. Were they actual contacts?
They’re hand-painted contacts. I’ve never worn anything in my eyes before, so it was definitely a feeling I’d never experienced. But they have someone to put them in and take them out. You can kind of feel them. But you get used to it after a while.

Did they help you get in character?
Yeah, I think you automatically have kind of a creepy look to you no matter what you’re doing or saying, so it definitely helps.

How many more Twilight movies will you do?
The third one is already done. I already filmed.

And after that it’s up in the air?
Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know about the fourth one.

Do you have other projects lined up too?
Well, I have The Runaways next spring, which is also with Kristen [Stewart], and I’ll probably be working next year, too, on something or other.

EXCLUSIVE: First Look at New Moon's Evil Volturi

In New Moon, the second installment in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular Twilight saga, readers are first introduced to the ancient ruling class of vampires known as the Volturi. Determined to capture their creepy menace for his screen version opening Nov. 20, New Moon director Chris Weitz has given them custom-crafted blood-red eyes.

"They're all hand-painted, specially manufactured contacts," Weitz tells PEOPLE. "They're opaque red, almost like preying mantis eyes. You can't really see into them. There's something terribly off-putting about it."

British actor Michael Sheen (The Queen) plays Aro, leader of the Italian blood-sucking clan. Although Aro and his brothers Marcus (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Caius (Jamie Campbell Bower) have been "alive" for thousands of years, Weitz says he "deliberately" gave them a younger look in the film – for which he credits author Meyer.

"Stephenie was very keen to steer away from a kind of wizard-y look for the vampires," says Weitz. "They do look quite young, but they convey a formality and self-possession, which comes from age."

Perhaps most lethal of all the Volturi is Jane (Dakota Fanning), an angelic-looking vampire who inflicts torture on her victims. "She is very strange and very spooky in this movie," says Weitz. "I think [Dakota] wanted to play an evil character for once."

'New Moon' EXCLUSIVE: Get Your First Look At Volturi Vampire Alec (Cameron Bright)!

A few weeks ago we got our first fleeting glimpse of Volturi vampire Jane (Dakota Fanning) thanks to the "Meet Jacob Black" trailer, which premiered before "Bandslam." Since then, Jane's fellow Volturi members have sadly remained concealed in the shadows. Until now. The villains of Volterra are stepping into the light (so to speak), and we've got your first look at Jane's twin brother Alec after the jump.

Portrayed by Cameron Bright ("Thank You For Smoking," "X-Men: The Last Stand"), Alec is described by "New Moon" author Stephenie Meyer this way: "The pale boy in the pearl gray suit could have been Jane's twin. His hair was darker, and his lips were not as full, but he was just as lovely."

See if Alec's movie look is on par with Stephenie's vision after the jump!

In this promo pic, the 16-year-old Canadian is wearing an obviously darker suit, but he's nonetheless a solid match for the eternally youthful vamp. His back story is said to be the following: "The Volturi were waiting to change Alec and his twin sister Jane until they were older, but humans tried to burn them at the stake, so the Volturi were forced to 'change' them while they were young. Since acquiring Alec and Jane, the Volturi have seldom needed to fight — their victims are simply slaughtered."

Dakota Fanning Officially Joins 'The Twilight Saga's New Moon'

Words are, Summit Entertainment have officially announced that Dakota Fanning will indeed play Jane in 'Twilight' sequel, 'The Twilight Saga's New Moon'.

Dakota Fanning's involvement in "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" has reportedly been made official. According to Twilighters Anonymous, Summit Entertainment have announced via e-mail to Twilight the Movie subscribers that the 15-year-old has joined the "New Moon" cast ensemble as the Volturi member, Jane.

"Dakota Fanning joins New Moon," so read the headline of the Summit's announcement. It further continued to read, "Acclaimed actress Dakota Fanning has officially joined the cast. And will play fan favorite Jane in The Twilight Saga: New Moon." Whether this report is true or not is yet to be proven as the studio has yet to come up with a public statement of the matter.

Dakota Fanning has been linked to the Jane character for quite sometime now. Soon after rumors surfaced that the "Coraline" star is linked to "New Moon", confirmations were outed that Fanning is indeed in negotiation to star as Jane. She also has come out speaking about the character, saying "The character is what I would be excited about. It's kind of evil, something I've never done before, and it's a vampire. You know, it's really cool, so I really hope it works out."

A sequel to 2008 hit vampire drama "Twilight", "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" will be directed by "The Golden Compass" helmer Chris Weitz using the script penned by "Twilight" screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. The romantic drama will see the return of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner among others.

Centering on the personal conflict Bella experiences, it will chronicle the time Bella Swan is left devastated by the abrupt departure of Edward Cullen. Finding solace in her friendship with Jacob Black, she soon finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves and her loyalty to the vampires is tested. The Summit Entertainment movie is aimed for November 20 U.S. release.
